Colors are not only beautiful to the eye but bring considerable influence on a person's actions. They can bring us up or take us down with the same ease. Laughter and sorrow are both expressed with colors. Sight is one of the most used and taken for granted of the senses. It is enhanced by color. Without color, sight would be less enjoyable, almost boring in fact. People's preference in colors give us information about their personality. Changes occurring in your life will find you preferring different colors just as wearing the same color each day would become boring. As you grow older, you find you like different colors. Find your favorite color and see if the personality traits do not resemble you in some form now. When your color taste changes, then check again to see if you are reforming your personality.

Color Personality Yellow

People with yellow personalities are a business minded lot. These people want others to know they are well educated, whether self taught or otherwise, and strive to attain success through anything mental. Making good leaders, they generally make up their mind in a methodical way. Every detail needs to be analyzed before they make a move. Any strategic game peaks their interest. Chess is the game for them. This personality can be a little stubborn. When the color goes more toward a mustard shade, these personalities know that they are the only people making the right decisions. This tends to make others a little suspicious of their motives. The true yellow personality makes wise decisions based on consideration of all points of view. Yellow women personalities would rather be in business, than to be mothers, but can take both jobs and be quite adept at doing so. When these people are under stress, they feel that they need to keep their emotions covered. If they show the stress, it is a sign of weakness. They try not to let you see them sweat. Keeping to themselves without inviting many others into their lives, they generally only have one or two good friends. These friends are usually people who are business minded too, although the true yellow personality depends on no one but themselves. Adoring tailored clothing, they usually dress quite professionally. Although the women may add larger accessories, they dress with a simple flair. Color Personality Purple Purple is the color of spirituality. Purple personalities are always striving to be better than they consider themselves to be, both on a spiritual, emotional and a mental plane. Needing more knowledge, they become avid readers. Trying to become what they think they should be, they search their own lives and the lives of others to find the answers. The study of all religions make them feel as if they are accomplishing something bigger than themselves in life. A good theological discussion is right up their alley. Wanting to help as many souls as they can, they are more than willing to give you the benefit of their education. Trying to achieve perfection, they seem to struggle with themselves more than most because they tend to be so critical of themselves. The muted shades of purple can be religious zealots who know what God wants for themselves as well as everyone else. In their way of thinking, they are the ones put here to enforce religion for God. These people can be just a little frightening when they start searching for their holy grail. The deeper shades of purple show someone working hard to find inner peace and love not only of their fellow man and themselves but of a higher power who many consider God. Purple personalities make good friends because they always give first of themselves. Generally they do not ask much for themselves but some negative purples could be self martyred. This comes from the fact that when they do finally ask for something from a friend, they may do so in such a way as the person they are asking did not understand. When they do not receive the item which they requested, they turn silent and think of themselves as the only one who works in the relationship, thereby becoming the martyrs they think themselves to be.

Color Personality Orange

Orange is the color of nature. Orange people are nature lovers. Being sports minded, they love to do anything having to do with the out of doors. Taking long walks in the woods revives them. When forced to stay indoors for long periods of time, they may become ill. Trees and animals mean a lot to them. They want to be a part of nature and are, just by the very fact that they are alive. Good professions for orange personalities include farmers, ranchers, football players, and guides. Oranges never meet a stranger. Their outgoing attitudes make them good friends. People always say good things about these down to earth people. Although they may sometimes invoke anger from others, it usually doesn't last very long. Who can remain mad at someone so helpful? They are good lovers and can be kinky where sex is concerned. Orange personalities do not consider themselves kinky, just willing to try what their partner may like. Tending to take up for the underdog, they will put themselves out to help someone who they feel needs assistance. Orange personalities are loud. They talk a lot and know enough to be dangerous about most subjects. In most cases they are the nicest people you have ever met but don't dare try to push one. If you do you will be sorry. Feeling as if you have a tiger by the tail, you are not sure whether to drop the tail or continue running in circles trying to stay away from it's teeth. Always aware of their surrounding, they tend to be more adventurous than most. Even though they are impulsive and thoughtful, they generally are very much aware of what they are doing. Learning and remembering through experience is a strong suit of theirs. Orange personalities believe God meant for them to have any good thing in life they want. As luck has it, they get it.

Color Personality Black

Black is one of the most beautiful of colors and yet is the void of color too. It is the color of detail. Black personalities want every thing done in detail. They are statistical and make good accountants. Internal Revenue Service agents probably like this color. If a job needs finishing, these are the people to finish it. These personalities need leaders, though, to tell them what needs to be done. Under guidance, they are able to get to the crux of the matter and solve very large problems. When put in a place to find the mistakes of others, they are right at home. Loving puzzles, and finding others' mistakes brings out their tenacious spirits. Black personalities will sometimes intentionally find mistakes just so that they can repair them. This color is one of holding things inside. When one wears black, they do not want to be touched. Putting a barrier between themselves and others is the purpose of this color. Keeping their strength inside so that they can better protect their emotions is the effectiveness of this color. Although they want to be part of the world around them, they want no one to tug at their sensitivity. Black is a relief color for most people, like "Mom's apple pie". It makes them feel comfortable and even, in some cases, makes them feel smaller, allowing them to hide from the sometimes cruel world. Color Personality Red A person who likes red runs the gamut of personality traits. This is the color for passion, energy, and money making. It can also have a darker side to it. If the person has a preference toward the more brick (reddish brown) red colors, they have problems with addictions such as drugs, alcohol, eating disorders or emotional instability. Red oranges are not only dynamos but love the outdoors and anything to do with people. Red with blue overtones can be energetic people with high emotions. Red personalities when in their true red mode are sexy and seductive. We now have statistical proof that men will look at a women wearing red, even though she may not be the most beautiful woman there, more quickly than they will anyone else in a room. It is the color for someone who wants to be powerful and in control. Business people who want to win wear the power color red to meetings in which they want to stand out. The red personality makes one feel more energetic or activated. Stop signs are red. Red gets your attention. This energetic personality craves attention and what's more: They get it. Being quick with their emotions, they may erupt into a temperamental volcano right in front of you then simmer down just as quickly. Quick to give others answers to any question, they feel they know everything. If they don't and it is proven they don't, you will find them trying to learn why. They are not frightened of not knowing the answer but only of appearing stupid. Because they are quick moving people, they want everything done in a hurry. When tired, they have to lay down right then because it feels as if all energy has escaped them. Once they have taken a quick nap they are up and ready for almost anything life has to show them. Red personalities feel invincible and others tend to think they are. Even though red's have all these personality traits, they do not make good leaders. They do, however, make good followers, once they decide they are being lead wisely. They have no compunctions in doing whatever it takes to get the job done in the manner needed. Red personalities, though, do have a tendency to go off on tangents. Their attention span is not all that it should be. When focused, they are very strong in their determination. Reds are quick minded, brilliant people who may not be well educated but are quick with answers because they have lived the circumstances. Color Personality White White is the color of purity. The color of new snow or light from above. What we fail to see is that snow and light has impurities in it but looks as if it is the most pure of all sights. This personality sees themselves as very special because of this color, sort of above it all. Watching others with interest, they blend in with their surroundings. Shyness comes with this color but it is not a true shyness. Waiting patiently for others to notice them before they make their thoughts known, they tend to appear shy but in truth, they are very outspoken. Virginal attitudes abound with these people. They feel pure no matter what they do. The virtue of purity is attributed to them by others as well, whether they deserve this characteristic or not. With sober sight, they tend to look others over with a very critical eye. Even while this is happening the person they are appraising does not feel they are being criticized but analyzed instead. If they win the approval of the white personality, these analyzed people act as if they have just won the lottery. White personalities feel they are right in their belief structures although they are not sure they want to discuss those beliefs with others. The fact that they know they are right is enough for them. It is not uncommon, however, to notice a slight smile cross a white personality's face, when another acknowledges their belief is correct. Self-importance is a part of their personality but does not interfere with their higher motives unless they are a negative white personality.

Color Personality Blue

Blue is an emotional color. People with a blue personality stay within themselves and do not trust people very much. They watch every move others make. Pale shades of blue show someone who wants everything in order. Their closet is immaculate. They know where any piece of clothing is and most likely how long it will take them to get it out of the closet. As blue moves to the deeper end of color, it becomes more moody and shows it. With royal blue, one can be on a high or in the deepest of wells. This color would probably be worn by one who is deciding to parachute because it would mean one needed to make a quick decision. When looking back on that decision though, the person pulling the ripcord would not be so sure they made the correct decision. The navy colors are very emotional but also want to hide it. It's almost as if they are wallowing in the fact that they are emotional. Some women, with a navy personality, go on cleaning binges, others go shopping. If your house has too much blue in it, you may find yourself depressed most of the time. A baby put in a totally blue room cries all the time, but when taken into another room, it is a happy baby. Blue is a good color but it needs other shades to balance it. Blue people think with their emotions. They are either way up or way down; feeling all the emotions they can experience on their way to either. Crying when they are happy or sad, they are feelers. Having a need to feel every thing, they leave themselves open to others. Quickly they take the mood of any person they are around whether they are upset or elated. Feelers don't even know why their emotions run the gambit. They are products of their environment. Blue people are no fun to be around when they expect you to be down with them. Showing signs of co-dependency, they need you to be by their side feeling with them as they do.

Color Personality Pink

Pink is the color of peace. People who love the color pink usually are either in a blissful state or looking for one. They want to draw the little smiley faces on everything. The perpetual smile on pink personality faces can grow thin when you are not in the same blissful state they are. Truly loving everyone, they try to see the best in others. If they don't find something good in a person, there has to be a very good explanation in the pink personalities mind as to why not. Those who have this personality quietly study the best way to approach problems and then act on their thoughts. Because they tend to research ideas this way, they may be seen as slow but they are anything but slow. Pinks are youthful looking and usually have translucent skin. They see the world through rose colored glasses. The truth of the matter is that it might be nice if we could all put those glasses on now and then. They are shy, very intelligent, hard working people who wish they were more a part of the mainstream but are frightened of moving too quickly. Pink personalities watch what they do or say because they are afraid that others may see them in a harsh light. They try to make everyone happy. Others notice their wonderful senses of humor, though the pink personality may not laugh aloud. Some may even say they have a dry sense of humor. Color Personality Green Green is the color of healing. Green personalities want to help every one. They are natures mothers. These people are usually in the medical profession or some occupation which helps people. Preferring to watch rather than to become involved in others business, they usually keep their thoughts secret. Others see them as good listeners because of this quality. This characteristic makes them wonderful counselors. Others take for granted that the green personality can see more than one side to a situation without bias. Green personalities make others feel at home in their house by putting them at ease immediately. They try to take care of others with all the care their mothers gave them. Peacemaker is their sworn duty. They want harmony in every one's life. Green personalities may even stop an argument between others by starting one themselves. Others think that green personalities make the best of friends because they are jovial, caring and can keep a secret. In order for a green personality to feel good about themselves, they have to be helping someone or something. Nurturers by choice, they are the ones who take care of animals, humans and plants. cigarettes. Also, Bidis, like cigarettes cause health issues such as cancer, heart disease,
high blood pressure, and many other serious health problems.

Drug use can cause you to lose your ability to remember things, to think clearly and to
study properly. Drug use gives you the impression that you are more alert and
aware, but under the influence of drugs you are actually less aware, and less alert.
Drug use can also cause people to act in strange unpredictable ways. A person can
undergo a complete personality change when under the influence of drugs. Since
drug residues can remain in the body for many years after they were taken, the
effect on the mind can last a long time. Don't lose your mind! Avoid drugs.
2. Drugs mess with your body
Drug use can make you ill and an overdose can kill. Drugs are poisons after all. The list
of diseases you can catch as a result of using drugs is very long and includes
Hepatitis C, HIV and AIDS. Since drugs also use up your body's supply of vitamins
and minerals, you become more prone to diseases. Many drug users suffer
from malnutrition as a result of their habit. Why be a loser? Stay healthy!
3. Drugs mess with your wallet
Drug use interferes with your ability, which can make it harder to earn money. In the long
run, the more competent a person is in a job, the more likely that such a person
will earn a higher salary. However a person under the influence of drugs is quite
likely to make expensive mistakes and be incompetent. That is unemployment
waiting to happen.
Also, a drug habit can be REALLY expensive (up to hundreds of pounds per day!) and
this is why many addicts are forced into crime. Don't waste your money. Drugs are
the ultimate betrayer - you pay big money to destroy yourself.
4. Drugs mess with your travel plans
Anyone convicted of drugs offences will not be allowed entrance into some countries
such as Japan, Canada and USA.
Why lose exciting opportunities to travel?
Why limit your options as to where you want to work & live?
Many people like to work abroad, particularly in the USA, for a time during their career.
This would be impossible with a criminal record.
5. Drugs mess with your life
Drug use that seems a "cool" idea in the beginning can turn into a living nightmare that
includes accidents, hospitalisation, a life of crime, a criminal record, hurting those
you love, destroyed relationships, a prison sentence and death. Drug users often lose
their enthusiasm for life, give up sports and hobbies etc, in their fixation on the
next score for their habit. Taking drugs definitely gives you a new lifestyle, but it is
the lifestyle of a sad loser with no prospects.
6. Drugs mess with the planet
Many drugs are grown in Third World countries. The drug barons involved cut down
forests for space to grow the drugs, thus destroying the natural habitat for thousands
of creatures and upsetting the ecological balance.
It is true that natural forests are cut down for constructive reasons by legitimate
companies, but there are laws in place which compel those companies to plant new
forest as replacements. Drug criminals, needless to say, ignore these and all other
laws. Buying and taking drugs encourages more natural forest to be destroyed.
7. Drugs mess with society
Criminals manufacture and sell drugs. They do not care what effects the drugs have on
their victims; they are only interested in the money. These criminals terrorise
ordinary people and society, using violence against anyone who tries to stop them.
These criminals establish a social environment where there is no respect for law &
order, only respect for violence. This generates fear, suspicion and misery in our
communities. This destabilises society and could lead to its disintegration.
Buying and taking drugs supports this criminal infrastructure.
8. Drugs mess with your love life and fertility.
There is evidence that abuse of drugs can lead to impotence in males. Certainly, abuse of
drugs in females can affect unborn children, with the babies of drug addicts far
more likely to be underweight and to suffer from birth complications.
The damage that drug use can do to one's physical appearance is very obvious.
9. Drugs mess with your hopes and dreams.
Drug addicts, when craving their next fix, often do not care about anything other than the
immediate high demanded. All other considerations, every aspect of normal
human behaviour are ignored in this compulsion. Everyone has hopes and dreams
for the future, but for addicts those hopes and dreams only focus down to where the
next score is coming from. Hopes and dreams for the future? Only despair and
nightmare for addicts.

It can be difficult to say no to alcohol for anyone, but it is especially difficult for those who are quitting or cutting down on alcohol. You can avoid places where drinks are served, but eventually, you will be offered a drink by someone you don't want to explain your alcohol problem to. The best ways to say no are casual, polite responses to an offer, which provide an excuse that can't be argued with. Here are my five top phrases for refusing alcohol.
1. I'm Driving
This is the ultimate excuse. Some people who are quitting alcohol volunteer to be the
designated driver for precisely this reason -- they want to spend time with friends,
but don't want to drink. This response is also great role modelling for others, and
adds to the climate of acceptability of staying sober behind the wheel. Anyone who
pressurizes you to drink after you giving this response isn't worth listening to.
2. No Thanks, I've Just Finished One
What I like about this response is that is so lacking in value judgements about drinking
that no-one can accuse you of being uptight or preachy. How you feel after a drink
is an individual matter, and if you don't want another drink instantly, all it implies is
good personal boundaries around your own comfort. It also shows you are not a
compulsive drinker, and sets the tone for others to pace their drinking too. Yet the
implication is that you might have had a drink if you felt like one, so this works
well for the type of people who tease and berate those in recovery -- the kind of
companions you may not want as friends, but are sometimes unavoidable in a
social situation.
3. I've Had My Limit For Tonight
This is the best response if you regularly drink with the same people, want to control your
drinking, and have set a limit based on your blood alcohol concentration. Others
will learn over time that you will drink only a certain number of drinks within a
certain amount of time, so they can enjoy sharing a drink with you within those
limits. Controlled drinking is a goal for many people with alcohol problems.
4. I Want to Keep a Clear Head
Variations on this response are, "No thanks, I've got work tomorrow," "No thanks, I've
got an early start in the morning," or "No thanks, I don't want a hangover." This is a
great way of letting people know that alcohol does not rule your life, nor will you
let it interfere with your day to day functioning. Keeping a clear head may not be
important to all drinkers, but it should be to you.
5. I Don't Drink
This response take the most courage, and is the most subject to demands for an
explanation. You may have to put up with being asked if you have a drink problem,
you may have your masculinity or sense of fun challenged, or you may be informed
that, "You can have one drink." But it is the all-round best response for anyone who
is serious about recovery from alcoholism, or who wants to put an end to the
nonsense of peer pressure to drink alcohol.

Darwin Now Exhibitions in India
Charles Darwin, naturalist par excellence, penned the modern theory of evolution. His birthday fell on 12 Feb 1809. The year 2009 marks not only his bicentenary but also the hundred and fiftieth year of the publication of his seminal book ‘Origin of Species’.

Darwin propounded that all different species of life, including humans, evolved slowly over billions of years, from common ancestors by way of natural selection. This implied that the best of the traits that helped the individuals survive in a habitat, were passed on to their offspring. As time passed, this set of advantageous qualities accumulated and led to the transformation of the individual into a species entirely different from its ancestors. For e.g. humans from apes, birds from reptiles and so on.

British Council has endeavored to put together a unique initiative, christened ‘Darwin Now’, which seeks to celebrate his legacy in the 21st century.

Darwin’s ideas have had a profound impact on contemporary biology and have improved understanding of our biosphere and humanity’s place in nature. This project takes up a wide array of global events and initiatives which are a corollary to his theories. British Council verbatim ‘Exploring the fundamental, influential and sometimes controversial nature of his legacy and its relevance in today’s world…’

This is a moving exhibition and was on display in Kolkata early on this year and Darwin Now Exhibition was in Bangalore from 27th Oct to 02nd Nov at the High Grounds. The exhibition is on from 9th- 30th Nov at the British Library, Pune and British Library, Chennai. Gujarat Council of Science City, Ahmedabad shall host it from 9th- 25th Dec.

Atelier's - Asia's Biggest 3rd Youth Theatre Week
Atelier’s 3rd Youth Theatre Week, touted as Asia’s Biggest Youth Theatre Week, is slated to begin from 15th of this November. It is an initiative of Atelier’s Expressions, an organization dedicated to promoting unique teaching & learning methods of education, incorporating Drama & Theatre- In- Education techniques.

Script Reading sessions have been under way since the beginning of this month across the University of Delhi’ s North & South Campus. The theatre week evinced a keen interest from the college teams, wherein over 80 entries were received in this segment. Campus performances have been lined up for 5- days, with two days of exclusive street theatre activities at the University Campus. You can catch street theatre live in action at the Arts Faculty, North Campus on 16th Nov and Venkateshwara College on 17th Nov, 10 am onwards.

The event shall be flagged off to a start by Delhi Chief Minister Ms. Sheila Dikshit on 15th Nov at the Hotel Ashoka. Asmita Theatre shall open the festival by presenting ‘Ambedkar Aur Gandhi’ at the Amphitheatre, Hotel Ashoka at 6:30 pm. Theatre stalwart Lushin Dubey would be the speaker on this day. There is an interesting line up of special guest who shall talk with students, notably Gul Panag & Saurabh Shukla on 18th Nov, Vinay Pathak on 19th Nov, Piyush Mishra & Bubbles Sabharwal on 20th Nov. All of them would speak post performances at the Sriram Centre, Mandi House.

Theatre enthusiasts can purchase tickets online for three of the plays on their very own portal Buzzintown.com including ‘Ilham’ play in New Delhi , by Mumbai based Aranya Theatre, scheduled for 18th Nov at 8 pm.

‘Jean Anouilh’s Antigone’ play, presented by Atelier Theatre in collaboration with Ankur, the dramatics society of SGTB Khalsa College, has been inspired Fifth Century B.C. play by Sophocles, set in France. It is a tale of confrontation between the Individual and the Establishment and discusses the nature of power, fate and choice. This show is on for 19th Nov at 7:30 pm.

Delhi Based Actor Factor Theatre Company presents ‘The Leela Tapes’ play in New Delhi , flaunted as A shocking tale of revenge! The play is an engaging, nail biting psychological thriller, full of suspense. It is bound to bring about some serious introspection along with providing wholesome entertainment. The show is going to be put up on 20th Nov at 7:30 pm.

The venue for all these three plays is Sri Ram Centre, Mandi House.

Turquoise Cottage at Vasant Vihar shall host the grand finale with a Get Together on 21st Nov, 12 pm onwards. Delhi based band ‘Them Clones’ shall perform along with the winners of the Rock Castle ‘Acoustic Hunt’.

The pre event hype has been creating waves at the famous Oxford Bookstore, Statesman House, Barakhamba Road all through this month.

Voice of Bangalore Season3 Grand Finale and Winners
This year Voice of Bangalore Season3 witnessed a huge number of contestants. This singing competition went on for a month and six contestants sang in the Finals. The judges were well known people of Music Industry; Kunal Ganjawalla (playback singer of Blockbuster movie Murder), Yograj Bhat and Mano Murthy.

The Voice of Bangalore Season3 grand finale started with great enthusiasm and the three judges kept on showering their veteran insights on all the six contestants (Sahana,Vyasaraja, Swarna, Shamsher, Akankasha and Vikas) in each round. As you can make out from the pictures Garuda Mall was packed to the capacity.....

In the first round the contestants entertained the audience with Kannada film songs. Sahana was the first participant and she sang Nagamandala movie song, "Ee Hasiru". The judges complimented her as an ‘original voice’. Next came Vyasaraja and sang Aatave Hudagatave from the film Hatavadi in the first round plus "Tanhai" in the second round. Vyasaraja was followed by Swarna Rathod then Samsher next came Akankasha. Last but not least came Vikas.

The second round was dedicated to Bollywood Hindi film songs and the month long Voice of Bangalore Season3 ended with a final duet round. Continuously the Judges appreciated and guided them in a remarkable manner.

Finally, Vyasaraja in the male category and Swarna in the female category walked away with the coveted title of ‘Voice of Bangalore’ Season3.

The winners were awarded a brand new Maruthi Suzuki A – Star, Diamond Jewellery from Gili World, a Laptop and other branded merchandise.

That's not all, along comes Vyasaraja and Swarna's way the fame and fortune in the music Industry.

The local newspapers already considered all the six finalists as winners of Voice of Bangalore Season3 - the singing talent hunt contest.

Kala Ghoda Festival of India, Mumbai
Kala Ghoda, for the uninitiated, is the cultural hub of Mumbai, also known as the ‘art district’. Home to a host of art galleries, museums, educational institutions, boutiques, restaurants, and lots of historic landmarks in the vicinity, Kala Ghoda, located in South Mumbai, is a heritage haven. The recently concluded Kala Ghoda Festival of India (30 October- 02 November), was a precursor to the bigger, more popular annual Kala Ghoda Arts Festival, which shall open in January/ February. Festival of India was open to all with free entry. All the four days were marked by a line up of performances and various activities, with a Children’s Festival to add color to the festivities.

Inaugurated by the filmstar Jackie Shroff and Mumbai Police Commissioner D Sivanandhan, the festival opened up to a flying start with a spell bounding performance by Bharatnatyam dancer Gracy Singh, followed by an engaging act by the famous Bollywood/ Pop singer Anushka Manchanda.

Next evening’s highlight included Gary Lawyer live and a street play by the Laadli Group. The ghazal maestro Jagjit Singh enthralled the audience on the third day of the festival, along with Sufiana Qawwali which was presented by Rakesh Pandit.

The last day opened with the Banmac Orchestra by Zubin Mehta, and the grand finale was the electrifying vocal performance by the incredibly gifted Shilpa Rao, who belted out several Bollywood hits like ‘Wo Ajnabi’ and ‘Khuda Jane’ to a mesmerized audience.

Several interesting workshops were organized as a part of the Children’s Festival like one on Origami by CRY, another on Masks & Drama, Toran Making, Calligraphy, Puppet Making, New Year Calendar Art, to name a few. Not just catering to the creative side, there were fun workshops too like the one on Magic with Magician Mhelly, Wizardry & Witchcraft, Miming, Stories through Drama, Paint Blast and Ballet, aptly titled ‘Put on Your Dancing Shoes!’.

Art, music, food, new talent, shopping, drama, and entertainment were a part of this interactive cultural extravaganza.

OctoberFest: The ‘King of Good Times’ swills over
All roads lead to the Palace Grounds, the venue of the Bangalore’s very own Octoberfest. But everyone didn’t seem to be going though.

It was an unusually subdued Saturday evening. The normally knotty traffic at Mekhri Circle was a little sparser. One expected milling crowds at the venue but there was no cause for apprehension. It was more a sprinkling than a flood.

Octoberfest is a take on the famous Oktoberfest of Munich in Germany where it is basically a beer festival with no allegiance to any particular brand or brewery. However here it is more a promotion exercise by a beer brand which claims to be the king of good times.

The venue was immaculately laid out. Barcode reader machines scanned the tickets for authenticity. Security guards meant business. Everyone was patted down and each bag was scrutinized.

A few young men wearing protective masks were indulging in a game of cow boystyle shooting armed with real-looking pellet shooting guns in a gaming area right near the entrance. A few Germans, probably on a nostalgic trip, stood around watching. There were even more Germans with their families further down.

Beer kiosks were everywhere selling the in-house brands. People were already inside the covered air-conditioned hall with a big stage at the far end. The rock band scheduled to play first were already tuning their ware. People with mugs of beer in hand were strolling about purposefully in anticipation. Collin Charles, Parachute, Slain, Infernal Wrath, Raghu Dixit and Galeej Gurus were billed to play today on the indoor and the open air main stages.

Outside a game of knockdown-and–grab was in boisterous progress. A tower of beer cans stood six cans high. The game is to knock it down with a tennis ball from a distance about the length of a cricket pitch in three tries.

Boys and girls formed separate lines to have a go and were having great fun in the process. A big girl knocked off three cans to her great surprise and joy of her boy friend.

A food fest going on along side took care of snacks and bites for the beer guzzlers. Every kind of cuisine seemed to be present, not to forget popcorns, sweet corns, candies and roasted starters.

A foreigner family is taking turns getting photographed at the real formula one racing car prominently put on show. It didn’t look so menacing as it can be, though.

But OctoberFest: The king of good times faltered on one score. At 300 bucks for an entry ticket a few mugs of beer on the house would have been in order and would have added to the jollity and sales. But asking youngsters to shell out five mugs worth of money for entry and asking them to shell out again to buy beer is not good business acumen.

Though, the chassis is developed in Germany, but the modifications are done with Indian roads in mind.

Champions League 2009 - CL’s is non-starter
It seems like no one can have enough of T20 matches or is it that Lalit Modi needs to hit refresh on people’s collective memory on a regular basis to remind the world of his presence?

Whatever the reasons that transformed the idea of the Airtel Champions League from thought to execution the event has hardly been what it was touted to be. The so-called game changing clash of titans planned on the lines of the European football league been lack luster for the get go. With the league stage underway across three cities New Delhi, Hyderabad and Bangalore the tournament features the so called best T20 teams from across the cricketing nations.

The 12 teams which are participating in the event include Deccan Chargers, Delhi Daredevils, Royal Challengers Bangalore (India) Eagles, Cape Cobras (South Africa) Trinidad & Tobago (West Indies) New South Wales, Victoria (Australia) Wayamba (Sri Lanka) Somerset, Sussex (UK) and Otago (New Zealand).

The real reason to watch any sporting event is the players involved. The big names deciding to give the event a miss speaks volumes about the whole deal. While one of IPL’s biggest names Greame Smith, who would have captained Cape Cobras, was out due to an injury, Michael Clarke decided to forego yet another T20 fixture in India. The Aussie captain in waiting has already skipped the two IPL events.

With over a hundred players participating in the Champions League, this would act as a good hunting ground for many of them. With Australia India series around the corner this would have been a good platform for players to try for the national side but the three IPL that had a horde of Indian players the Champions League has failed to do the trick.

Sadly one got a taste of everything else besides cricket--the CLT20 has a charter of rules, an international format which can confuse rocket scientists and even transfer tales that have been associated with football--Herschelle Gibbs could have played for his IPL team but opted for Cobras as Deccan Chargers didn’t coffer up the transfer fee.

While conceptually the Champions League sounds like the greatest idea since the light bulb the reception has been far from good. While the IPL is pre-dominantly an Indian event getting teams from far off places like Trinidad and Tobago doesn’t really help to make some thing exciting. With none of the Indian teams in the running for the semi-finals, this is a sinking ship.

Die-hard cricket fans would argue the very need for another fixture in the middle of the season. In any case T20 isn’t taken as seriously as Lalit Modi, the man behind IPL, would have liked and the absence of key players like Kevin Pietersen (Royal Challengers) and Paul Collingwood (Delhi) mars the proceedings.

Trust Modi to milk the cow till kingdom come; he has left no stone unturned to ensure that the event gets eyeballs but the empty stands and dismal television ratings sing a different tune.

Our this friday outing
Hey folks this Friday we went to Eagle Ridge Resort and had loads of fun. Reached there by 11 AM and started our cricket match. Playing cricket at 12 in the noon was no herculean task for us. Perhaps we were too much enthusiastic and inclined to have real fun. Even girls were also not all worried about getting tanned, they too played beyond our expectations.

Navratri Celebrations in India
Navaratri (literal meaning “nine nights” in Sanskrit) are considered very auspicious and sacred for all the Hindus not only in India but abroad too. Generally people observe fast for the Navratris and pray to Goddess Durga for the health and prosperity of their loved ones. Navratris fall in Ashwin month of Hindu calendar and in September or October as per English calendar. This year Navratris are from 19th Sept 2009 till 27th Sept 2009. As usual many legends are associated with the origin of Navratris and one thing in common is that they all are related to Goddess of Shakti in some form or the other. The devotees start by worshipping the first form of the goddess as Shailputri on the first day for the fulfillment of their wishes. During ensuing days, they revere other forms and on the ninth day, mother goddess grants them their wishes as Siddhidatri.

Goddess Shakti has many avatars like Durga Maa, Ambe Mata, Lakshmi Mata, Mata Saraswati, Vaishno Devi, Chandraghanta, Shailputri, Siddhidatri, etc. Each carnation of Shakti is associated with different aspects of our day to day life like Mata Lakshmi is Goddess of wealth and prosperity, Saraswati Mata is Goddess of Wisdom and studies, Durga Maa is Warrior Goddess i.e. fights against evil and injustice. All these incarnations of Shakti are worshipped through out India during Navratris.

Navratri is celebrated in different manners with great fervor and enthusiasm all over India and marks the commencement of the festive season. Perhaps the most famous is the Garba Folk Dance or Dandiya that originated in Gujarat. People dress up in extremely colorful clothes with dazzling jewellery and accessories and gather to play Garba the whole night long with the beats from a multitude of musical instruments. Youngsters have a gala time and wait for the Navatris eagerly. Thank God Navaratris come twice in a year.

This year starting from 17th Sept 2009, Tourism Corporation of Gujarat Ltd (TCGL), has organized “Navaratri 2009” in Panji, Goa to promote Garba Dance Show in connection with the nine day dance festival.

In Northern India in states like Haryana, UP, etc people create colorful clay figurines of Gods, Goddesses, toys, plants, food, etc These are called “Saanjji” and ardently worship it for whole of the Navratris. I still remember one of our neighbours used to make and paste wall size Saanjji and it used to be the best one. As kids we used to specially go to her place to see what different she has done this time. And the elderly lady whom we addressed Daadiji (grand mother) would boast off of her week long hard work “iss baar mein pichle ek haffte se laggi hui hunn is Saanjji ko bananein mein…” (I have been working so hard for the last 1 week to make this Saanjji). All women would gather in each house to sing songs and bhajans in the praise of Durga Mata. With time things have changed a lot and now people prefer ready made calendars of Durga Mata instead of home made Saanjji to save them time and labor and also for the fear of spoiling their walls. And no one gathers to sing bhajans either.

In Jammu there is a very famous pilgrim of Hindus called Mata Vaishno Devi. People walk 14 kms from Katra (28 kms in total) chanting Maa Durga slogans and Bhajans for the darshan of Mata Vaishno Devi. This place does not close during night time even because people walk day and night for the darshan and stand for hours in long queues. Visiting Mata Vaishno Devi during Navratris is considered to bring good luck to your family.

In Tamil Nadu too Navratris are celebrated and called Dussehra and in West Bengal Navratris are celebrated beginning from the seventh day. First three days are devoted to to Mata Durga, next three to Mata Lakshmi and the last three to Saraswati Mata. The Bengalis too mount statutes of the deities and do visarjan on the tenth day.

On the 10th day people prepare halwa, puri and kale cholle and this pooja is called “Devi ki Kadhai”. First this food along with money and some gift is offered to small girls. These girls are called “Kannjakk” and Hindus believe that all small girls are equivalent to Goddess Durga. Very respectfully these “Kannjakks” are invited to the homes, gents wash their feet and give them food etc seeking their blessings in return.

Such is the respect given to females in Hindu culture but it is really very disheartening that some people celebrate only a boy’s birth and abort female fetus. The declining number of girls’ ratio to that of boys in few states like Haryana, Punjab, etc is something of great concern. Lets all pledge on these auspicious Navratris that we won’t differentiate among genders and treat girl child equally.

Van Heusen India Men’s Week (VHIMW) was organized 11 - 13 September 2009 at Grand Hotel in Vasant Kunj, New Delhi. Some of you might be wondering why I am discussing VHIMW because every now and then Fashion shows are being organized all round the world. The specialty of VHIMW is that it was first ever “men’s only” show. Generally all other Fashion Weeks are for women like Lakme’ Fashion Week, Wills India Fashion Week, etc.

Collections of ace designers like Ashish Soni, Rohit Gandhi, Rahul Khanna, Rina Dhaka, Tarun Tahiliani, JJ Valaya, to name a few were showcased. Various aspect of this Men’s Fashion Week are worth discussing like the number of designers participating in it (28) and only 15 designers’ collections went on ramp... Lucky Huuh

In all 40 handsome male models set the ramp on fire by elegantly carrying Fashion industry stalwarts’ meticulously done outfits. It was a good platform for both the models and as well as the new designers.

Metrosexuality was also an important element of this show and it was intelligently used by designers like Aslam Khan and Rajvi Mohan. Even before the Fashion Show started news spread that one of Vijay Mallya’s big name from IPL team Bangalore Royal Challengers or Formula 1 might also be seen on the ramp thereby giving audience an oomph. Whosoever spread this word was 100% right - Anil Kumble, captain of IPL team Bangalore Royal Challengers was one of the Show Stoppers along with Dino Morea.

To up-the-ante at the first Men's Fashion Week, Whyte & Mackay the premiere scotch brand from Dr Vijay Mallya's portfolio, opened an exclusive lounge for the hottest action with designers, celebrities and the who's who of the fashion fraternity.

Kharaashein Play by Gulzar in Bangalore
Theatre in India dates back to the Rigvedic dialogue hymns. During the Middle Ages, India was invaded innumerable times and each settlement left a significant mark on the Indian theatre.

After our Independence in 1947, theatres spread throughout India as one of the means of entertainment. There have been very famous theatre directors like Kader Khan, Prithviraj Kapoor, Ebrahim Alkazi, Utpal Datta, Shankar Nag, Prasana, Shafi Inamdar, Naseeruddin Shah, Rohini Hattangadi, and so on. Some famous playwrights were Vijay Tendulkar, Rafat Shamim, Habib Tawir, Govind Deshpande, Sharad Joshi, Partap Sharma, Poile Sengupta, Gurucharan Das, to name a few.

Playwrights and directors have moved to Bollywood too. They have a very good reputation and became prominent people with whom other celebs like to work and learn from. One such Bollywood icon is Gulzar.

Gulzar aka Sampuran Singh, notable poet, lyricist, writer, and film director has contributed significantly to the world of Indian theatre. One of Gulzar’s famous play is Kharaashein. Kharaashein means scratches or scars in English... Kharaashein comprises verses and short stories written by Gulzar Saheb. Kharaashein has been conceptualized by Salim Arif and directed by Mathura Kalauny, founder of Kalayan Theatre Group.

The dialogues and language of the play Kharaashein clearly reflect that it has been penned by Gulzar only. This play is about the scars of inhumanly massacre during the unfortunate partition of India in 1947 and the massacres which continue till date sometimes in the name of Religion.

The basic theme is magnificently carried by the performers in all the small stories and actors beautifully talk and enact their personal experiences as well as others experiences, right from the Jallianwalla Bagh massacre to the 1992-93 Mumbai riots and of course the notorious Gujarat carnage too.

Kharaashein is an emotional experience one must go through and be stirred to the depth of one's soul. It's the kind of play where you invest 100 minutes of your time to witness the play and the play stays with you for a long-long time caressing and cajoling your finer feelings. This play Kharaashein will be performed in Bangalore at Chowdiah Memorial Hall on 12th September, 2009. So start buying your tickets now.

Ganesh Utsav Celebrations in India
Ganapati Bappa Moraya!

As per Hindu calendar Ganesh Utsav i.e Birthday of Elephant headed Lord Ganeshji, is celebrated on the fourth day of Bhadarapada month and this year it was on 23rd August. The word “chaturthi” also implies “fourth” but most of you who are not familiar with the Hindu Calendar won’t be knowing this :).

Lord Ganesha is the son of Lord Shivji and Devi Parvati. According to the Epics Devi Parvati created Ganeshji with her spiritual powers when Lord Shiva was out for a battle with the demons. One fine day while going for bathing Devi Parvati told her dutiful son Ganeshji not to let anyone inside. But then only Lord Shiva returned after winning the long and arduous battle with the Demons. So Shivji wanted to meet his dear wife and share His happiness with Her but Ganeshji didn’t allow Him to go inside. Father and Son duo had a tough battle and in this unfortunate battle Shivji chopped off Ganeshji’s head.

When Devi Parvati heard this sad news, She wept a lot and requested her husband to make Ganeshji alive because He (Ganeshji) didn’t know that Shivji was His father and was innocent. Then Shivji gave Ganeshji elephant head. (Won’t go into details why Ganeshji was given elephant head only) So Ganeshji is also called Gajanana ('Gaj' means 'elephant' and 'anan' means 'head' in Sanskrit). He came to be known as Ganapati or Ganaadhish, when Lord Shiva made him the Lord of his army (ganas), He has a single tusk, and as per one legend, he lost one of his tusks when he killed the demon Gana. So, he's also known as 'Ek Danta', the one with a single tusk.

His face and a rather cute round stature makes him stand apart from other Hindu Gods. He has a snake tied around his big stomach and his 'vahana' (carriage) is the MOUSE. In most of his images, his trunk is turned towards the left and very rarely do we find images of Ganesha with trunk turned towards the right. He is usually depicted in images, as well as idols, with four hands (Chatur bhuja). Three of his hands carry a rope (pasha), a spear like weapon (Ankusha), a sweet (Modak i.e. Laddu) and the fourth one is raised for blessings.

His mother, Goddess Parvati gave him the name Vinayaka meaning the remover of all obstacles. This is also depicted in his other names like Vigneshwara and Vignaharta. That’s why all Hindus chant Lord Ganesha’s name before beginning any new work so that that work is completed without any obstacles. On marriage cards also Lord Ganesha’s picture and mantras are pictured.

By far the most popular, in the pantheon of 33 crores Hindu Gods and Godesses, Lord Ganesha is considered to be bountiful and eternal. He is the endower of joy, the God of knowledge and of wisdom. He is worshipped for 'Siddhi' meaning success in any undertaking. His qualities are best described by his manifold names.

Lokamanya Tilak, during the British Rule, made Ganesha Utsav more popular so as to unite all the Hindus all over India and to discourage the evils of colonization. Ganesh Utsav is mainly clelebrated collectively in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, etc and typically in cities like Bombay, Pune, Bangalore, etc. People living away from their home or home town make it a point to go back home and unite with their whole family to celebrate Ganesh Utsav.

Beautiful idols of Lord Ganesha are brought home and worhipped. Some people do visarjana after one and a half day or 3 days or 5 or 7 or 10 complete days. Now-a-days, eco-friendly Ganesha idols are available. Good gesture we need to care for both our rituals as well as environment. Over the years, the Ganesh Utsav has held a mirror to society, with its tableaux reflecting current social themes such as AIDS, population control, the Kargil War, political farces, major sports events, and even 9/11!

Beautifully decorated gigantic , Ganesh Utsav pandals are set by the devotees. I see many such pandals by the roadside on my way home. Bollywood celebrities too celebrate Ganesh Utsav with great fervor and enthusiasm irrespective of their religion. Hmmmm there are few videos on internet how Salman Khan celebrated Ganesh Utsav this year.

Several Bollywood movies have picturised Ganesh Utsav celebrations. Also there are many songs and bhajans in the praise of Lord Ganesha. There is also a very cute animation movie called “My Friend Ganesha”, about Lord Ganesha, for the kids.

BTW those of you who do not know what “Ganpati Bappa Morya” means. Morya - depicts the inseparable relationship between devotee & Lord Ganesha. Morya Gosavi was a famous devotee of Lord Ganesha in the fourteenth century. Or it also means Ganapatti is mine.

Jagjit Singh, the Indian Ghazal Maestro
Jagjit Singh the Indian ghazal maestro, is a world renowned ghazal singer. Jagjit meaning “Jagg jeet liya ho jissne” (World conqueror) needs no introduction

Jagjit Singh born on 8th Feb 1941 in Sri Ganganagar, Rajasthan, started his career as a ghazal singer n 1965. Jagjit did his early school studies from Rajasthan and then post graduation in History from Kurukshetra Universtiy, Kurukshetra (K.U.K) Haryana.

Right from his child hood Jagjit was interested in singing. He learnt music under Pandit Chaganlal Sharma for two years in Ganganagar, and later devoted six years to learning Khayal, Thumri and Dhrupad forms of Indian Classical Music from Ustad Jamaal Khan of the Sainia Gharana school. Late Prof Suraj Bhan, the Vice Chancellor of Punjab University and KUK encouraged him to go to Mumbai. Hence in search of a great career as a singer and musician Jagjit Singh came to Mumbai in 1965.

At that time there were other established ghazal singers like Talat Mehmood, Mehndi Hasan, Begum Akhtar, Noor Jahan, etc. At that time ghazals used to be based on classical and semi-classical Indian music. In 1975 Jagjit Singh released his first album, The Unforgettables (On HMV LP Records), which was scorned by the established maestros but was a huge success.

In 1967, Jagjit Singh met Chitra. Though she was married earlier but someone has rightly said “there is no perfect time or place for love”. After a courtship of 2 years they got married in 1969 and became first successful ghazzal singing couple of India. Few of their successful albums were Ecstasies, A Sound Affair and Passions.

Jagjit Singh’s Bollywood debut was ARTH movie, whose ghazals are still very popular.

Jagjit Singh is truly a man of substance. He carved a niche for himself with strong determination and optimistic spirit at a time when there were other established ghazal singers. He went on to be somebody from a perfect nobody. He didn’t loose his interest in singing even though he lost his only child Vivek, in an unfortunate road accident, at a young age of 21. Such an unfateful death of their only child left the ghazal maestro couple grief stricken so Chitra Singh preferred seclusion and retired from singing, after their last album together “Someone Somewhere”, as a tribute to VIVEK but Jagjit Singh moved on. He gave several successful albums one after another like Hope, In Search, Insight,Vissions, etc.

His enchanting ghazals in Hindi, Punjabi and Urdu, use the choicest poetry by renowned poets including Mirza Ghalib, Firaq Gorakhpuri, Qateel Shifai, Ameer Meenai, Kafeel Aazer, Sudarshan Faakir and Nida Fazli, and contemporary writers like Zaka Siddiqi, Nazir Bakri, Faiz Ratlami, Gulzaar, and Rajesh Reddy

Besides ghazals, Jagjit Singh has also sung Bhajans and Gurbani (Hindu and Sikh devotional hymns respectively). Albums such as Maa, Hare Krishna, Hey Ram...Hey Ram, Ichhabal and also Man Jeetai Jagjeet in Punjabi.

Perhaps Jagjit Singh didn’t believe in crying over spilt milk and cursing God and his fate for such a big loss of his beloved son, Vivek. In my humble opinion, Jagjit is a true winner, who prefers to keep his personal and professional life separate and do something worthwhile in life and for the needy too. Jagjit Singh is an active member of several children related organizations and NGOs. He keeps on collecting funds for CRY too.

His voice and singing style carry so much depth and emotions that one can’t stop listening his ghazals time and again and correlate his/her life with His ghazals. Through his ghazals, Jagjit Singh has pictured different phases / stages and emotions of a person’s life like romance, love, separation, grief, loss, sorrow, pain, break up, misunderstandings and of course happiness too.

15 August 2009 - 62 Independence Day of India
This Saturday on 15th August 2009 India will be celebrating its 62nd Independence Day. After a long and arduous battle against British Rule, India gained its Independence on 15th August 1947 but for this Independence we fellow Indians had to pay very heavy price i.e. India was divided into two countries India and Pakistan, two well known enemy neighbor countries. Pakistan celebrates its Independence Day on 14th August and India on 15th August.

Innumerable sacrifices not even mentioned in the history were made to gain this freedom but now it only means “ek aur chutti” (one more holiday) to us. We have cultivated a mindset of checking in the calendar “pandhraah august ki chutti kab hai iss saal” (this year 15th August holiday is on which day?). And if it is on weekend, “shit ek chutti maari gayi” (Shit one holiday has been deprived :( )

Let me ask you few questions?

Is this what 15th August Independence Day means to us now?

How many of us bother to wish each other “Happy Independence Day” either by phone, sms or card?

Sing National Anthem on 15th August or 26th January?

Tell our kids about the significance of this big day and the sacrifices made?

Salute our National Flag or watch parade or flag hosting?
Exchange sweets (if we can do it on Eid, Diwali, Christmas, etc then why not on 15th August)?

How many of us know complete Hindi syllables ?? ?? ?? ?? ??? ?????- ?? ?? ?? ?? ?? ...? (But we all know English syllables by heart)

If you ask someone “its been how many years since we gained Independence?” that person will calculate and then answer.

So are we really Independent?

If anything goes wrong “sarkar kuch nai kartti hai desh aur janta ke liye” (Government does not do anything for the country and the common man) and other innumerable complaints but do we ever ask ourselves what we have done for the country or for our other fellow Indians or environment?

I’ll like to share one small incident here. Last year on Independence Day, I saw one woman wearing tri colored suit (white shirt, green salwar and saffron duppatta). I was really impressed by her patriotism and complemented her for the same. Recently stores and malls have started giving Independence Day discount but I doubt whether its patriotism or yet another marketing funda……..

For the last 1 week you might be seeing hawkers selling National Flag on the traffic signals but hardly anyone bothers to buy it. And if someone does then he’ll / she’ll start bargaining “nai nai 30 Rs ka nai 15 Rs ka do” (no no its not for 30 Rs give it in 15 Rs) but let me ask you “Is our National Flag that cheap?" that we can bargain and get it. For me its PRICELESS. How about You?

Rakhi or Raksha Bandhan a bond of love
“Bhaiyya merre Rakhi ke Bandhan ko nibhana”

Raksha Bandhan festival is always celebrated on the full moon day/night of the Hindu month Shraavana (Sawan) in various parts of India (generally in August as per modern day calendars). RAKSHA BANDHAN is called Avani Avittam in Southern parts of India. The word “Raksha” means “protection or guarding” and “Bandhan” means “bond” hence signifying a protection from all the worldly evils.

The bare threads of Rakhi connote the relationship between brother and sister. When a sister ties a Rakhi on her brother's (right) wrist she prays for her brother’s health, success and longevity and also prays that he should get each and every creature comforts. At the same time the brother vows to guard the honor of his beloved sister and tries to give her some good gift (or cash) in return of her blessings.

There are several stories associated with the origin of this festival called Rakhi or Raksha Bandhan. And I won’t get into its details but two rather interesting ones are as follows: Epics state that Lord Indra - the supreme power of the heaven, was almost on the verge of losing a long drawn battle against the demons. Indira's wife decided to help her husband and tied a thread on Indra’s wrist. This helped Lord Indira win the war against the demons hence evil.

Another theory is, Yamaraj, (the God of death and hell) had a sister called Yamuna. On every "Shravan Purnima", she used to tie a Rakhi on her brother Yamraj's wrist. Hence forth Rakha Bandhan became a ritual for sisters to tie a Rakhi on their dear brother's wrist.

Earlier “maulli” a red colored fragile thread was used as Rakhi but now Rakhis made of Resham thread, beads, kundan, gotta, pearls, silver, etc are available in fancy designs. Markets are flooded with attractive designer Rakhis. Special Rakhis of teddy bear, spider man, batman, Lord Hanuman, etc are available for kids too.

Though the thread used for Rakhis is fragile but the bond between a brother and sister because of it, is very strong. And by tying this fragile thread year after year, the bond of love and affection grows stronger. Even if brothers are living at a distance or are far apart and can not make it for this big day of Raksha Bandhan, sisters send them Rakhis either through post or mail or even Internet now a days.

In return brothers give gifts, sweets, and cash to their sister(s). This festival symbolizes selfless love of both brother and sister for each other. One can find several gift items in the market or on net. And well the one you choose depends upon how deep your pockets are. Love Aaj Kal review: Love Aaj Kal is an interesting film depicting contemporary scenario as well as Rishi Kapoor's story in parallel. Two different eras are running simultaneously in Love aaj Kal. Music is by Race fame Pritam.The chemistry between Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone is audience's delight. Both stars Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone are very optimistic about Imtiaz Ali directed and Dinesh Vijan produced, Love Aaj Kal's huge success.

In an exclusive interview to Zoom TV Deepika praised Saif and his looks in the movie Love Aaj Kal. Deepika said that Saif really carries it well whatever designers give him and also said that Saif is a "good clothes horse".

When asked "How you got this film?" Deepike replies "Imtiaz Ali wanted her not Kareena to be in Love Aaj Kal right from the beginning" and she empathizes with Kareena. Deepika was approached for this film even before her Debut "Om Shanti Om" was released. :)

This sensational leggy lass looks gorgeous as Meera in "Love Aaj Kal" that too with minimum make-up. Deepika says "Gals living in London and Delhi do not wear make-up daily". Corruption vs Networking vs Jugaad
We were invited for a dinner party the other day to a friends’ place. Amidst laughter and pleasantries, the host received a phone call from his daughter who was travelling by Rajdhani Express from Delhi to Mumbai. The poor lady was not carrying ANY identity proof with her, and so despite all her charm, she was being “harassed” by the Ticket Collector. The rules of the Indian Railway are supposedly very strict about such things – a person carrying an eTicket without an id, is considered to be travelling without a ticket and has to pay double the fare or get down right there (at the next station, I presume) – she was told. There was silence in the room. Nodding his head, the host exclaimed that the TCE was right, the daughter should learn a lesson and pay up… much to the dismay of the teary-eyed mother who ran out to call her bechari bitiya rani. As if on a cue, he excused himself too and asked everyone to continue to have fun. Chatting resumed…

The host reappeared no more than 12 mins later, a sublime smile on his face. He had “fixed” everything, he claimed amid cheers. He’d phoned a friend of his, who knew the divisional railway magistrate in some city in UP, who contacted his counterpart in Mumbai, who in turn was able to reach our trusted TCE on the moving Rajdhani… who went and consoled the daughter with a glass of chilled water and said she didn’t have to worry about a thing. The entire party crowd marvelled at the power of cell phones, not to mention agreeing on the power of the host as well.

All this until a meek voice said “but uncle, isn’t this corruption?”. Silence, murmur, jeering and loud mocking… “oh no – this isn’t corruption, this is networking beta”, “why do they have to impose such a stiff penalty? These goons will not catch the people sitting on the roof of the train, they will harass young children”, “this is the only way to deal with the system – without these jugaad India cannot survive”, “one should always have connections, anywhere in the world”… I was surprised at the power of the meek voice – who repeated the c word once again – and this time the few people against the motion could only muster “these kids today are so innocent –they know little about what it takes to live in the world”.

The incident reminded me of an article I had read a few days back on the subject of Jugaad (http://online.wsj.com/article/SB124745880685131765.html) in the Wall Street Journal where the author defines it as being able to “create what we need from what we have”. While she was talking of jugaad in the context of “frugal engineering” and “constraint based innovation”, it did bring to mind the jugaad carrier on the highways of Rajasthan and Haryana, made from old diesel irrigation pumps and sundry parts of animal driven carts. While the police will enforce pollution control norms (Bharat Stage I-II-III) on automobiles & check drivers’ licenses occasionally on highways, these carriers ply freely, with ease. No license, no registration plate, no norms – just “on the road again” attitude.

Is this corruption or a form of it? Apart from the nominal machinations (read: patchwork) to make things work temporarily, does a jugaad always lead to some form of corrupt practice?

Speaking from a Buzzintown perspective – our Classic version had a lot of jugaads in it… but I promise, none of them were even remotely connected to any kind of corrupt practice :) They were innocent things like putting the whole Article & Review section (as it evolved) in a banner on the homepage, or making our Search entirely context sensitive, or making our Artistes database available only through search (how does one search until they know what we have)… an afterthought perhaps.

Indian Festivals in July
“Rangeela rangeela desh merra rangeela” the song of Hindi movie Fanaa rightly describes India, the land of colors and festivals. One can savor festivals and fairs whole round the year so it would be appropriate to say that Indians eulogize more festivals in a year than there are days.

For Indians festivals mean resonant colors, jocoseness, liturgy, imploration and oblation to Gods, a banquet with near & dear ones, sweets, wearing new clothes and tons of masti with music and dance. Not only are religious festivals are solemnized in India but Mother's Day, Father's Day, Valentine's Day, New Year, etc too are given due significance. So India is a legitimate secular country where words like racism do not carry much weight.

Let’s delve few eminent festivals celebrated in India during the month of July.

Rath Yatra

The thousand-year-old, world famed, chariot festival called “Rath yatra of Lord Jagannath” is celebrated annually in Puri, Orissa. Millions of excursionists, enthusiasts and devotees come from India & abroad to watch the three comely chariots carrying wooden idols of Lord Jagannath, Devi Subhadra and Lord Balbhadra. Puri Rath Yatra is hailed with considerable panoply, boasts of a true extravaganza of credence and belief. This year Puri Rath Yatra was held on 24th June 2009 and for this very special occasion the Indian Railways had arranged 60 special trains from all over the country to Puri. Such is the significance of Puri Rath Yatra.

Apart from Puri, the Rath Yatra is lauded in few more parts of India too like in Ahmedabad, Gujarat and Mahesh, 3 km from Serampur in the Hoogly district of West Bengal. There is a famed saying in Bengali ‘‘Baro Mase Tero Parban’ meaning thirteen festivals in twelve months. And the Rath Yatras of Ahmedabad & Puri happen to be on identical day. The Rath Yatra of Ahmedabad is the second best where first being the Puri festival.

Guru Purnima

Gururbrahmaa gururvishnuh gururdevo Maheswarah |
Guruh-saakshaat parabrahma tasmai shrigurave namah ||

"I give my salutations to the Guru who is Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshwara. The Guru is Param brahma incarnate"

Its not only Hindus but all religions impart eloquent place and respect to Gurus or Ustads or Fathers or Popes or Mentors. Sikhs have 10 gurus, foremost being Guru Nanak Dev. Gurus are considered equivalent to God and a bridge between the mortal man and the Immortal God hence leading the disciple on the path of consummation of God. The auspicious day of Guru Purnima is applauded on the full moon day in the Hindu month of Ashad (July-August) and this year it is on 7 July 09, Tuesday. Guru Purnima is celebrated in the reminiscence of illustrious saint Bhagwaan Ved Vyas, the author of 18 Hindu Puranas, Mahabharat and Srimad Bhagavat.

Naag Panchami

Naag Panchami (festival of snakes in English) falls on the fifth day of Shravan in July/August and this year Naag Panchami happens to be on 26 July 2009. Then veneration to the Naag Devta (snakes) are paid. According to Hindu Mythology Lord Vishnu along with Mata Lakshmi, rests on the thousand-headed snake called Anant Naag or Sesh Naag in Sheer Sagar. Sesh Naag can hold up the earth on its fann or head. Lord Shiva wears snakes for ornamental purpose around his neck and in his hair (jatta) too. Hindu Mythological literatures state different reasons for celebrating Naag Panchami.

Naag Panchami is primarily eulogized in Southern India, Maharashtra, Bengal, Jodhpur, Kerala, Orissa and few parts of Assam. Someone has rightly said that India is the land of 4Fs i.e. fasts, feasts, fairs and festivals. So women observe a fast on this day. And they draw photos of nags with a mixture of cow dung, milk and charcoal powder on their house walls. On snake holes milk, sweets, ghee, rice, etc are offered on that propitious day. It is believed that people having Kaal Sarp yog in their horoscope can derogate it by fasting and worshiping nags on this day. Indians are so deeply religious that they worship even such perilous creatures. Few cultivated ones amongst you might call it all peeve or blind faith but it is all a matter of FAITH.

Kite Festival

Kite festival of Bangalore, Karnataka is a true example of how a hobby seeded the grounds for one new festival. Mr. V. Krishna Rao’s father along with his family started this in the year 1975. Steadly this became famous and more and more people started participating in it. Other family members and descendents too put good deal of efforts and time to keep this movement alive. This festival is a true secular fest. With lot of zest, the Krishanji Rao’s family members teach interested people how to fly kite.

Not only Bangalore but in other parts of India too kites are flown during different parts of the year like in North India especially on the eve of Makkar Sankranti in January. Two years back i.e. in 2007 Hyderabad witnessed the International Kite Festival as part of the Indo-Japan Friendship-Year celebrations.

Mango Festival

Now its time to do some food talk and one such truly delectable festival is International Mango Festival of Delhi. Sounds scrumptious hmm mango, “the King of fruits” Saharanpur district of Uttar Pradesh was the first to hold this festival but was later on switched to New Delhi, the capital of India to give it International exposure hence more mileage.

Since 1987 every year in July this festival is organized in unison at the Dilli Haat - Pitampura by the Delhi Tourism and Transportation Development Corporation (DTDC), the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority, the National Horticultural Board and the NDMC.

States like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Orissa, Assam, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Naidu, exhibit 500+ varieties of traditional as well as hybrid mangoes in this fest. To name a few varieties of mangoes displayed there are mallika, dasara / dusseri, amrapali, totapari, langda, sinduri, himsagar, malda, balia, chorasya, dhaman, dhoon, fazia, gelchia, nigarin kheria, ruchika, shamasi and the alphonso. This fest is commended in July when mangoes are at their best and buyers from around the world participate in this. Not only mangoes but their other mouth watering forms too like jams, jellies, various types of pickles (aachaars), chattani, aam pappad both sweet and sour are displayed on the racks of producers. So this delicious fruit can be relished in both raw as well as ripe form.

Few mango connoisseurs attend it regularly each year. This fest is total fun because visitors get to taste mangoes absolutely free, few competitions are held like mango eating competition for ladies, writing mango related slogans, mango carving, mango quiz and magic show. And that’s not all organizers invite 5 star hotel chefs who teach easy to do delicious mango recipes. So ladies this is your fat chance to impress your husbands. Needless to say there is a prize for the biggest mango every year.

Chandigarh too hosts International Mango Festival in the month of June at Pinjore Garden, nearly 20 kilometers from the city beautiful.
Mango growers from all across the country come to this annual festival to display their produce. The Agricultural Universities also participate in this festival. During the last 3 days of June Tamil Naidu too organizes one Mango Festival in Krishnagiri.

Saral Festival

Saral Festival is principally celebrated in Tamil Naidu during July with the nascence of rain. In Courtallam, when water plunges on the rocks, petite water droplets are carried away by the breeze which gives a fog like hallucination and this whole phenomena means “SARAL” in Tamil, the native language of Tamil Naidu. It is said that this water has medicinal properties and bathing in these waterfalls has a healing effect. So you see how a daily ritual like bathing is related to religion.
To make this festival even more interesting cultural program, competitions, conviviality are held. Good numbers of tourists come to indulge in this salient feeling of being neither wet nor dry as the moisture laden clouds pass across the region and temperature becomes considerably low.

Michael Jackson Died – the Buzz has left Town
In India, we woke up today to the excruciatingly sad news - The demise of Legendary Pop King Michael Jackson! MJ IS NO MORE!?!?! He died of a cardiac arrest on June 25th 2009 in Los Angeles. Michael Jackson has a huge fan following all over the world, and needless to say, they were all speechless. We can all safely claim that he was amongst the most successful “entertainers” of all time – his achievements since 1971 at the age of 11, his multiple Grammy awards and platinum discs, his innumerable world records, his truly iconic stature in both his personal & professional life…

The news of his sudden death spread like wild fire. His global fans rushed to confirm this on Google and other search engines. The celebrities following too blenched searching on Google, Wikipedia & Twitter. In fact, the news is that all three giants could not bear this sudden traffic surge and Google was down for almost half an hour. Google described the searches for “Michael Jackson died” as “VOLCANIC”

Michael Jackson 50, was born on 29 August 1958 in Gary, Indiana. Michael Jackson’s debut was in August 1962, The Jackson Five. Some of his eminent albums are Off The Wall, Thriller, Bad, Moonwalk (His autobiography), Dangerous, History, Invincible, etc. All his albums were herculean success and millions of copies were sold for each of them.

A comeback Michael Jackson tour was scheduled to begin from July 13th 2009 and 50 shows were already sold-out but God had planned something else. There is a saying “man believes God reeds….” Michael Jackson will always be alive in our hearts. His death is an irreparable loss to the music industry and they are the ones who’ll miss him the most. With a heavy heart I wrote this blog so readers please pardon my errors.
